Die Bundesregierung will die Entfernungspauschale weitgehend abschaffen. Bundesfinanzminister Hans Eichel (SPD) verspricht sich davon zusätzliche Steuereinnahmen von drei bis vier Mrd. Euro. Bisher kann jeder Pendler für die Fahrt von der Wohnung zur Arbeitsstätte für die ersten zehn Kilometer 36 Cent je Kilometer, für jeden weiteren Kilometer 40 Cent vom zu versteuernden Einkommen abziehen, unabhängig davon, was die Fahrten tatsächlich gekostet haben.
Dem Staat ist egal, ob der Arbeitnehmer mit seinem Auto, dem Fahrrad, Bussen und Bahnen oder zu Fuß unterwegs ist. Ausnahme: Fahrten mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln können abgesetzt werden, wenn sie mehr kosten, als die Pauschale abdeckt. Laut Gesetzentwurf soll für die ersten 20 Kilometer künftig keine Pauschale mehr gelten - oder im Amtsdeutsch: die Pauschale beträgt 0 Cent. Vom 21. Kilometer an sind dann 40 Cent absetzbar. Nicht ändern soll sich die Regel, wonach die Fahrkarten für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr abgesetzt werden können, wenn sie teurer sind als die Pauschale - im Fall der Neuregelung bereits vom ersten Kilometer an.
Die CDU-Vorsitzende Angela Merkel sagte in der "Bild am Sonntag": "Ich halte das für eine abenteuerliche Ungerechtigkeit, besonders gegenüber denen, die keinen Nahverkehrsanschluss haben." Dazu SPD-Fraktionsvize Michael Müller: "Es ist völliger Unsinn, die Autofahrer bei der Entfernungspauschale auszugrenzen." Das Finanzministerium presche grundlos vor. SPD-Generalsekretär Olaf Scholz zeigte sich im Norddeutschen Rundfunk offen für Änderungen am Entwurf des Finanzministeriums: "Wie man das im Einzelnen gestalten soll, das kann man diskutieren, da sind ja noch parlamentarische Beratungen da."

Mainboards ab ca. 1997 sind mit einer Standard-Knopfzelle vom Typ CR-2032 (Pa-asonic, Duracell und andere Hersteller) ausgestattet. Diese gibt es in Elektronik- / Photo- / Computer-Fachgeschäften. Vorsichtig auswechseln, der Haltebügel bricht leicht ab. Danach das BIOS-Setup aufrufen und wie oben gesagt vorgehen.
Mainboards von ca. 1995 bis ca. 1998 waren mit Dallas/Odin/Benchmarq Chips 12C887 (CMOS-RAM und Batterie integriert) ausgestattet. Wenn der Chip auf einem Sockel sitzt und nicht eingelötet ist , kann man diesen einfach austauschen. Eine neuen bekommt man in Elektronikfachgeschäften erhalten. Danach das BIOS-Setup aufrufen und wie oben gesagt vorgehen. Falls Das Mainbord (siehe Handbuch) einen 4-poligen Battery-Connector hat kann man sich auch eine Batteriehalterung für 4 x 1.5 Volt Mignon-Batterien und 4 Mignon-Batterien oder voll aufgeladene Mignon-Akkus beschaffen. Ist kein Anschluss vorhanden besorgt man einen 4-poligen Stecker mit Anschlusskabeln und verbindet diese mit dem Batteriehalter und stecke dieses (ev. vorher Jumpers entfernen) auf den Batte-ry-Connector. Der Minus-Pol der 4 in Reihe geschalteten Batterien muss mit dem Massekontakt, das ist einer der beiden äußeren Pins des Steckers verbunden werden, und der Pluspol der Batterien dem anderen äußeren Pin des Steckers. Danach das BIOS-Setup aufrufen und wie oben gesagt vorgehen.
